Leeds Opera Festival  from 23-30 August brings brand new productions of rare and wonderful operas to cities and communities across the North of England each late August Bank Holiday weekend. The festival combines performances from world-class and emerging artists with a programme of talks, panel discussions, workshops, community events and much more.

The 2021 festival celebrates the operas of Gustav Holst and includes:

– A double-bill of At the Boar’s Head, and a tale from an Indian Sanskrit epic, Savitri, with Meeta Raval in the title role. Savitri will feature an emerging artist chorus which will also perform a lunchtime concert on Monday 30th as part of the festival. Both productions will be directed by Emma Black and conducted by Lewis Gaston.

– A touring production of The Wandering Scholar to eight venues in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

– The world premiere of a work commissioned by the festival working with South Asian Arts UK, in response to Holst’s Savitri. The work has been created by Sarah Sayeed and Jaspreet Kaur, both of South Asian heritage.

– A brand new exhibition which celebrates 300 years of operatic history in Leeds. Visitors to The Leeds Opera Story can explore the hidden history of opera in Leeds, forgotten theatres and the singers and companies who first brought opera to the city – leedsoperastory.co.uk

– A free series of talks, discussions, workshops and events, including a live recording of the Operacast podcast, and a music making session for young children and families with Made with Music.
