Ballet Black, Pioneering dance company and long-time Leeds favourites, return to the city next month to present a double bill of bold and inventive choreography on 16 and 17 November 2018 at The Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre. Recently nominated for Achievement in Dance at the UK Theatre Awards, this is an unmissable dance experience.
As part of this newest programme of dance, the Company presents a new narrative ballet by Cathy Marston, The Suit, inspired by Can Themba’s South African fable. Choreographer of Northern Ballet’s Jane Eyre and forthcoming Victoria, Cathy Marston is renowned for her expressive and beautifully crafted work, and The Suit is the first UK dance adaptation of this affecting short story.
Completing the programme is a re-staging of Arthur Pita’s A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream, an exhilarating piece of dance-theatre for which the Portuguese choreographer earned an Olivier, South Bank and Critics’ Circle National Dance Award nomination following its première in 2014. The production mixes the classical and contemporary to get to the heart of Shakespeare’s comedy, unfolding to an eclectic soundtrack featuring Eartha Kitt, Barbra Streisand and Yma Sumac.
Cassa Pancho, Founder and Artistic Director of Ballet Black, says: ‘I am really excited to try something new this year by presenting our first ever double bill of narrative ballets. Our friends and followers have been asking to see Arthur Pita’s fabulous Dream again, … [and] we are also really pleased to have the chance to collaborate with the wonderful Cathy Marston on The Suit. The whole company and I are thrilled to be taking this double bill around the UK to share our work with our audiences all over the country.’
Tickets from the Box Office on 0113 220 8008.
