Northern Broadsides and New Vic Theatre’s revival of JM Barrie’s hit Regency comedy, Quality Street, brings a delicious confection of Yorkshire wit and romance to the Courtyard stage from 10-13 May.
Think Bridgerton meets Inside the Factory as Calderdale actor Paula Lane returns from her sojourn across the Pennines in Coronation Street as Kylie Platt, a tough nut with a soft centre, to her home county in the lead role of Phoebe Throssel.
This marvellously moreish show was created with a team of retired workers from the Halifax factory where Quality Street chocolates have been proudly made since 1936, wrapping the action in their witty and outrageous observations.
The story centres on the romantic entanglements of Phoebe Throssel, who runs a school for unruly children on Quality Street. Ten years after a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets an older, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action.
She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon beguiles the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled, can she juggle both personas? Or will the deception scandalise the town and wreck her future happiness with the man she loves?
This touring production of Quality Street, by the beloved writer of Peter Pan, was cut short in 2020 by the pandemic and has now been revived for 2023.
