Whether it’s a relaxed lunch to ease the trauma of Christmas shopping or a post Christmas lunch, after fighting your way through the January sales, a family meal, special occasion or romantic dinner for two Bill’s is the answer.
Housed in a Regency listed building on Albion Place, right in the middle of the hub of the city, the menu here always guarantee to please.
For their Christmas menu, which is available until the New Year, Bill’s have put festive spin on some of their usual dishes and created some rather unusual ones.
This was to be my first taste of Christmas and for my partner too who is home for Christmas after literally sailing nearly all the seven seas.
For starters I opted for the Ho Ho Ho-Honey Ham. This was a honey glazed ham hock terrine served with flatbread and celeriac remoulade. The terrine was tasty and smooth but unfortunately the strips of flatbread were cold and had seen better days.
My partners King Prawn Cocktail was rather meagre and devoid of the tower of smoked salmon pate.
I decided on the Fillet and Fizz a deliciously cooked pan fried salmon – crispy skin and cooked to perfection. It came with a chive mash, tenderstem broccoli and chive mash.
Pancetta Wrapped Turkey was my partners choice. A large plate of festive treats it came with Cumberland stuffing, pig in blanket, seasonal greens, roast potatoes, maple and thyme roasted root vegetables.
When it came to dessert it was certainly heaven on a plate – Bills desserts are synonymous with being inventive and delicious.
There was some Christmas magic with my dessert. My Banoffee and Baileys Mouse consisted of a white chocolate mousse, banana, dulce de leche served with a shortbread biscuit and a small vial of Baileys. It had a great taste and went down a treat.
My partners Black Forest Chocolate Tart was rich and smooth with a great new take on the pastry. The sour black cherry compote diffused the rich chocolate taste beautifully and the kirsch and vegan crème fraiche was the perfect compliment to the sweet.
As usual Bills has pulled out all stops with its Christmas tipples we chose the Winter Spiced Negroni consisting of Plymouth Gin, Campari and Sweet Vermouth. My favourite cocktail is a Negroni and this was really special.
