The wedding of the year is here as Orpheus, a musician of mythical power marries graceful Eurydice. When the newly weds joy is shattered by the sudden death of Eurydice, our heartbroken hero sets off on a mission to the underworld to rescue his bride certain that his love will overcome advertisity.
Opera North’s longstanding collaborative relationship with SouthAsianArts-uk, a Leeds based centre of excellence in Indian classical music breaks new ground for both companies in a staging of Monteverdi’s Orpheus.
This reimaging of the pioneering 1607 work, often credited as the first great opera, is the culmination of a long period of research and development, during which musicians and consultants from both organisations have explored ideas and connections between Indian and Western classical music.
Musical Directors Jasdeep Singh Degun and Laurence Cummings weave together their respective traditions of Indian and Classical Early Music. It is sung in Italian and Urdu with English titles.
The opera is at The Leeds Grand Theatre until 22nd October as part of Opera North’s Orpheus Season.
