Rehearsal images give an exclusive insight into the company of The Importance of Being Earnest as they create a vibrant retelling of Oscar Wilde’s sharpest and most outrageous comedy. Directed by the award-winning Denzel Westley-Sanderson, the co-production premieres at Leeds Playhouse from 5 – 17 September, before heading out on a UK tour.
On bringing the company together, Director Denzel Westley-Sanderson said: “They’re a great bunch; all so different. But that’s exactly what you need to create exciting work. The play is a wonderfully silly comedy, so the most important thing is that it brings joy. But it’s about reclaiming truth, and honouring truth. I hope it opens up the conversation so that people start to think about Black Victorians and their place in our history.”
Melding Wilde’s wit with contemporary references, this sassy co-production from Leeds Playhouse, ETT and Rose Theatre offers a unique insight into this classic satire about dysfunctional families, class, gender and sexuality.
The cast includes Phoebe Campbell (Cecily), Valentine Hanson (Merriman/Lane), Joanne Henry (Miss Prism), Daniel Jacob, a.k.a. drag queen Vinegar Strokes (Lady Bracknell), Adele James (Gwendolen), Abiola Owokoniran (Algernon Moncrieff), Anita Reynolds (Dr. Chasuble) and Justice Ritchie (John Worthing).
