The sessions are all run by one of the charity’s crafting experts, all of whom have a passion for repairing and upcycling clothing. Helen Moyes is set to run the online Basic Sewing Skills Workshop and Sewing Machine Workshop. Leonie Pratt is holding more festive themed sessions teaching people to upcycle a Christmas jumper and make a tote bag .
With WRAP’s research showing that only a third (35%) of UK consumers say they can darn or patch a hole[1] and that more than half (55%) now recognise that the impact of clothing on the environment is severe, compared with just 35% in 2017[2], Habits for Life hopes the workshops will help change consumer behaviour as to how they buy and use clothes.
Stephanie Campbell, Habits for Life Project Manager at WRAP, said: “We’ve already seen a positive response from the people of Leeds to our Habits for Life project and we’re thrilled to host our face-to-face workshops to help teach the Leeds community how to repair, refashion and upcycle their existing clothing.
“We know people are becoming increasingly aware about the impact of their shopping habits on the environment, with almost half (47%) of UK consumers undertaking a sustainable clothing behaviour since 2020 lockdown began[3], so we hope these workshops will help people learn new skills to make their clothing last longer. The event is open to people of any skill level and our crafting experts plan an exciting programme of activity for each session, so we look forward to welcoming the people of Leeds and help reduce our carbon footprint one piece of clothing at a time.”
The next Habit for life workshops are:
