Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers get on their bikes … and cycle to York Theatre Royal as The HandleBards bring their take on Romeo and Juliet to the main stage on May 25 and 26.

The show all began with three actors cooped up together during lockdown. Fuelled by cabin fever and with a bookshelf full of Shakespeare, they did what they do best and created an unhinged and bonkers, laugh-out-loud version of Romeo & Juliet.

Expect “music, mayhem and more costume changes than you can shake a spear at”. To quote The HandleBards: “Forget the tears and tragedy, and get ready for some live and wired Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before.”

The company toured an all-female version of Romeo & Juliet on bicycles to outdoor venues from London to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2016. The show toured internationally to Singapore, Malaysia, India and Myanmar the following year.

Now comes a fresh version with three actors – Lucy Green alongside founder members Paul Moss and Tom Dixon. The show is directed by Nel Crouch and designed by Nick Corrall and Lucy Green.
