Available now on BBC iPlayer, Tragedy, a newly released film from artist and film-maker Lynne Marsh, captures the fascinating backstage world at Opera North during a live performance of La traviata in 2015.
Uncovering a parallel narrative that unfolds in the ‘real time’ of the opera, Marsh turns her camera on the usually hidden elements of the production, exploring the performance from the perspectives of stage managers, technicians, dressers and performers backstage. The mechanics that create the staged event are laid bare as operatic tradition comes into contact with the reality of backstage work.
The film has been made available on BBC iPlayer from Friday 26 June 2020, for 30 days, as part of BBC Arts Culture in Quarantine season.
