WE’LL MEET AGAIN – V.E. DAY TRIBUTE

A VIRTUAL SINGALONG to ‘We Will Meet Again’ by veterans all over the country, as part of VE Day Celebrations on Friday 8th May.  The invitation comes from the WRAC Association – the only charity that specifically supports female army veterans.

The 101 year old charity is asking female veterans UK-wide to raise their voices via a  specially-arranged Zoom call. Their dulcet tones will be supported by the rousing sounds of the Yorkshire Military Band.

At 8pm, the Zoom will kick off with a talk by Colonel (Retired) Alison Brown, Vice President of the charity, about the history of VE Day and its significance. This will be followed by the first broadcast of the charity’s new podcast series featuring stories of women who served during WW2. The story to be told will be that of Grace Taylor, a woman who lied about her age to be able to join the army and went on to witness the Plymouth Blitz.

Then, at 9pm, the singalong to Dame Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again will commence.

Given that many veterans are elderly and locked down indoors, it is more  important than ever that these women’s contribution to their country  – and that of their predecessors, is commemorated.

“We cannot let COVID-19 stand in the way of celebrating VE Day 75!”  says Betty Webb MBE, Bletchley Park Codebreaker during WW2 who recalls VE Day as “incredibly happy” and celebrated with a friend who had escaped Germany

Radio stations are also invited to play We’ll Meet Again at 9pm on 8th May to participate in their own way.

ABOUT THE WRAC ASSOCIATION

The WRAC Association is a vibrant, active, charity with two main objectives:

Membership: The Association provides comradeship, friendship, esprit de corps and support to over 3,000 members (all female Army Veterans) via a network of branches (local, national and international), events, participation in parades, a membership magazine, Lioness, and the maintenance of historical links. Benevolence: The WRAC & ATS Benevolent Fund distributes grants to former servicewomen (1917-1992)

in need of financial assistance. In 2019 the charity awarded over £250K in benevolence grants.
