Fifty-two years ago, Night of the Living Dead started out as a low-budget independent horror movie featuring seven strangers taking refuge from flesh eating zombies in an isolated farmhouse and for a short season Leeds Playhouse have recreated an exciting shot for shot stage version of the ground breaking 1968 horror film Night of the Living Dead Co-directed by Andrew Quick and Pete Brooks, a cast of seven actors including Laura Atherton, Morgan Bailey, Luke Bigg, William James Holstead, Morven Macbeth, Matt Prendergast and Adela Rajnović will take to the stage armed with cameras, a box of props, a rail of costumes and their wits as they attempt to recreate the mould-breaking film shot-for-shot before our eyes. Featuring 1,076 edits in 95 minutes, it promises to be a heroic struggle – and success is by no means guaranteed. George A. Romero’s original film was an apocalyptic vision of paranoia, community breakdown and the end of the American dream. In this new stage production, masters of digital theatre, imitating the dog, create a love letter to the movie; a remaking and remixing that attempts to understand the past in order not to have to repeat it. It is in turns humorous, terrifying, thrilling, thought-provoking and joyous. Above all, in the retelling it becomes a searing parable for our own complex times. Presented courtesy of Image Ten, Inc, Night of The Living Dead – Remix is at Leeds Playhouse until 15 February. Box office: 0113 213 7700; www.leedsplayhouse.org.uk |
