Opera North is giving everyone the chance to get creative in 2019 as ON After Hours returns with a series of sessions inspired by The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky’s ground-breaking work which the company is staging in association with Phoenix Dance Theatre as part of its upcoming season.

Starting on 14 January, ON After Hours: Rite will be held at Headrow House in the heart of Leeds from 6pm to 7.30pm every Monday giving those with a musical bent something different to do at the start of the working week. Drawing on the themes of nature, mystery and rituals, participants will explore singing, body percussion, physicality and movement under the guidance of a vocal leader from Opera North and a guest movement artist. Together they will produce a brand new piece of work to be performed at Belgrave Music Hall on 1 April.

Jacqui Cameron, Opera North Director of Education, said: “When we launched ON After Hours at Headrow House last year, we were keen to provide something in the city centre for anyone interested in music, singing and live performance. The number of people the original sessions attracted proved that there is a real appetite for this kind of activity at the end of the working day. We look forward to welcoming a new group to ON After Hours: Rite on 14 January and seeing what they create together.”

The block of sessions can be booked online for a fee of £65 (£60 for students). The emphasis is on fun so, while some previous experience of singing would be useful, it is not essential. There is no requirement to learn choreography or to take part in dance routines.
