The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra returns to Leeds Town Hall for a concert lead by maestro Yutaka Sado, starring piano soloist Angela Hewitt, on Saturday 27 October.
The concert opens with Finlandia, Sibelius’ patriotic tone poem inspired by his beloved Finland, composed in protest at the censorship taking place in his snowy homeland where the struggle of the Finnish people is represented by turbulent melodies. Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt, whose Beethoven interpretations have been hailed ‘like no one else’s’, then performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5. The orchestra also performs Sibelius’s Symphony No 5, which was commissioned by the Finnish government in celebration of Sibelius’ fiftieth birthday. Writing in his diary at the time of composition, Sibelius compared his musical ideas and motifs to streams and rivers, all flowing towards the sea.
The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra gave its first concert 111 years ago in 1907. Since then the orchestra have toured the world, made numerous recordings to great acclaim, worked with many great conductors and soloists and are committed to promoting music through their diverse performances and continuing education projects.
Tickets are available from the Box Office on 0113 376 0318
