Talented musicians of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain perform music from across the pond at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 18 August as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of the orchestra and mark the centenary of composer Leonard Bernstein.
The all-American affair begins in dusty Havana with Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, a reflection of the composer’s time spent amongst the rainbow avenues and huge palm trees. The Under 13 Orchestra then performs music from the 2016 hit film La La Land plus Three Dance Episodes from the musical On the Town, Bernstein’s energetic Broadway hit set in Manhattan that follows the lives of three sailors.
Abe Lincoln’s iconic speeches – including his 1863 Gettysburg Address – take centre stage as the orchestra performs its rendition of Copland’s Lincoln Portrait. The performance closes with Symphony No 9 by Dvořák, – a hymn to the musical styles of Native and African Americans.
The National Children’s Orchestra has forty years of experience in training, developing and mentoring young musicians. Now with twelve ensembles, the NCO has nurtured generations of the UK’s most extraordinary young musicians.
