This May half term, the National Railway Museum is hosting one week of family activities from science shows to experimenting with magnetic-powered travel.
Who needs wheels when you can learn about high-speed levitating trains made possible with magnetic travel and discover the British genius behind Maglev with one of our intriguing talks.
Maglev (from magnetic levitation) was developed in the UK and is a system of train transportation that uses two sets of magnets to create a ‘floating train’ enabling trains to travel at great speed taking advantage of the lack of friction. The museum also houses the UK’s first commercial Maglev rail vehicle which operated from Birmingham airport on a monorail. Maglev is now used by the fastest vehicles in the world on routes in China and Japan.
Explore the future of railway, by designing and building your very own bottle-sized magnetic railway network to take home(26 May- 4 June), book online to guarantee a place. Families can also take a seat and watch one of our amazing interactive science shows or listen to the story of early railway inventors in our new Stephenson’s Rocket workshop.
There is also have storytelling sessions for under-6s, take a journey on a real steam engine with our steam rides and catch our demonstrations of our magnificent Great Hall turntable in action.
