Award-winning bassoonist Gretha Tuls performs with The Hallé at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 16 January.
Principal bassoon of The Hallé, Gretha Tuls performs Weber’s alluring Bassoon Concerto which is one of the finest, and few, composed for bassoon. The concerto is now one of the most significant works in the bassoon repertoire. Under the baton of conductor Lothar Koenigs, The Hallé will also perform Wagner’s A Faust Overture and Brahms’ majestic Symphony No 1, a piece which the composer confessed took him twenty-one years to complete!
Born in the Netherlands, bassoonist Gretha Tuls’ appointment as Principal Bassoon of The Hallé is a testament to her incredible talent. Gretha studied at The Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and continued her studies at the Musikhochschule in Mannheim. In 2010 Gretha became Principal Bassoon of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra until 2014 when she joined The Hallé. She also plays with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and has done guest work for the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Academy of St Martins in the Field.
Gretha Tuls has performed all over Europe with orchestras and ensembles including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Opera de Rouen. She has also won several competitions; the Prinses Christina Concours (NL), Young Music Talent of the Year (NL) and the German Musikhochschule competition to name but a few. In between her busy performing schedule Gretha is tutor at the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music.
