LEEDS INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRAL SEASON

Leeds International Piano Competition alumnus Sunwook Kim joins The Hallé and the first female conductor of the 2017/18 Leeds International Orchestral Season, Karina Canellakis, to perform music by great German composers Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Brahms. This concert takes place on Saturday 24 February at Leeds Town Hall.

Sunwook Kim won the 2006 Leeds International Piano Competition aged only eighteen performing Brahms Piano Concerto No 1 and returns to the home of the Piano Competition  to perform the music that began his solo career. Sunwook has performed with internationally renowned orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Tokyo Philharmonic and has worked with acclaimed conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kirill Karabits and John Eliot Gardiner.

Karina Canellakis studied violin at the Berlin Philharmonic Academy and took conducting masterclasses at The Juilliard School in New York. She was awarded the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship in 2013 and the following year became the assistant conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for two seasons. She won the Georg Solti Conducting Award in 2016 and has worked with many internationally renowned orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Stockholm Symphony orchestra and Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Karina began the 2017/18 season by debuting at the BBC Proms with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She is the first female conductor to perform in the 2017/18 Leeds International Orchestral Season.

Amongst the world’s top symphonic ensembles, The Hallé makes a welcome return to the Leeds International Orchestral Season.
