This month marks two years of Hyde Park Book Club; Leeds’ most eclectic, events-led, pan-arts creative hub. From 5 – 11 February 2018, the unique and bohemian venue will host a week of events which further highlight Hyde Park Book Club’s role in providing a platform for local artists, musicians and writers to showcase their talent.
Two years on, Hyde Park Book Club has come a long way from being a cosy café in 2015 to now hailing as a live music and arts space across two floors, with a café serving plant-protein brunches and burgers from the world’s first plant butcher, The Vegetarian Butcher, a bottle shop selling locally sourced beers to drink in or takeaway and a book shop with an exclusive section dedicated to classic and contemporary Yorkshire writers. The birthday week of events will begin with a rock opera by dramatic collective, HalliGalli, who will incorporate performance, dance and DJ’s into this piece of live art, set in a swamp, more specifically, the ‘Galliglades’. Leeds Independent Socialists will host a discussion on the crisis in Venezuela, and assess the future prospects of the Bolivarian revolution, whilst Red Ladder’s Chris O’Connor will be holding a scratch night for his new writing, Life is Sketchy, a piece which explores the ridiculous nature of life. There will be several evenings dedicated to live music, including a night of alternative rock with Leeds local band Green Gardens, Hyde Park Book Club’s monthly jazz club, electronic night and open turntables night, Maine-based singer songwriter, Lina Tullgren’s UK-leg of her European tour and the first event from Madame Jazz, who will host an evening supporting and celebrating local women in jazz with all the profits being donated to BASIS Yorkshire, a local charity who provide safety and support for sex workers in Leeds. Hyde Park Book Club owner and founder, Jack Simpson: “So many great people have been a part of Hyde Park Book Club’s journey, from all the nights that have started here, the performances, conversations and exhibitions. We’re super proud of the space and everything that has happened already. Leeds is so exciting right now. The writers, the artists, the thinkers and musicians. It’s great that we can provide a space for this to take place in. Two years has flown by and we’re excited about where everything is heading!” For full details of the programme for February visit www.hydeparkbookclub.co.uk. The venue at 27-29 Headingley Lane is open from 10.00am to llpm |
