The English Chamber Orchestra is joined by award winning conductor Alexander Shelley, Leeds International Piano Competition alumni Heejae Kim and young trumpet player Jason Evans at Leeds Town Hall for a concert on Saturday 27 January. They will perform music by three composers of the Great Viennese tradition: Schubert, Mozart and Haydn.
Pianist Heejae Kim was awarded second place in the 2015 prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition – her performance of Piano Concerto No 4 by Beethoven in the final round was described as the audience’s favourite. She was also awarded the Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize in the competition. Heejae studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig and has given many recitals internationally in Brussels, Leeds, Paris and Seoul.
Jason Evans graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2014 with a first class honours degree in trumpet performance. He was awarded the Queen’s Award for Excellence during his studies at the Royal College of Music. Jason first studied the trumpet at Chetham’s School of Music and is currently the Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia orchestra in London, making him one of the youngest principal trumpets in the country.
Alexander Shelley won the Leeds Conductors Competition in 2005 and has developed a flourishing career as a conductor since his success. He is currently the Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and the Principal Associate conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Previous engagements have linked Alexander to the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and he has taken part in masterclasses with legendary cellists Mstislav Rostropovich and Janos Starker. The Austro-Germanic repertoire of this concert is where Alexander’s heart lies in conducting as the music is considered his favourite.
The English Chamber Orchestra is the world’s most recorded chamber orchestra. It makes a welcome return to Leeds Town Hall to perform in the Leeds International Orchestral Season.
