Families will be walking in the air as a very special screening of the classic animation The Snowman takes place on Sunday 17 December. The enchanting animated film will be shown on a giant screen as the Orchestra of Opera North perform the famous soundtrack live. A re-telling of the classic rags-to-riches story of Cinderella will also add some extra sparkle, accompanied by Prokofiev’s orchestral ballet score.
For those who enjoy the swagger and toe-tapping sounds of The Rat Pack at Christmas, a collection of festive hits and all-time favourites awaits on Tuesday 12 December. Songs will include White Christmas, Baby It’s Cold Outside, The Christmas Song and Let It Snow.
All the family are invited to sing along at The 2017 Lord Mayor’s Carol Concerts which take place on Thursday 14 December. Leeds Philharmonic Chorus and Rothwell Temperance Band join forces in this concert in aid of Candlelighters charity, which supports families facing children’s cancer across Yorkshire.
The Choirs of Leeds Cathedral celebrate Christmas as they perform a free lunchtime concert of Advent and Christmas music on Monday 11 December. This will be followed on Tuesday 12 December with a free Brass Band concert conducted by renowned cornetist Phillip McCann, no booking is required for these but early arrival is essential.
There’s also an exciting array of choral concerts. The Orchestra of Opera North and Leeds Festival Chorus invite you to open a Festive Box of Delights on Saturday 9 December, as they perform a seasonal mix of some of the most famous and inspiring Christmas pieces ever composed. In addition, the Orchestra of Opera North return with the massed voices of Inspiration celebrating the anticipation and excitement of the Advent season with old favourites and new tunes on Saturday 16 December.
After all the Christmas celebrations, it’s then time to celebrate the coming of the New Year with an afternoon of Viennese waltzes, marches and polkas. The annual Viennese Whirl concert takes place on New Year’s Eve, and there’s a free glass of bubbly with every ticket.
