The Orchestra of Opera North performs a glorious programme of music by Britten, Mozart and Elgar with renowned Scottish conductor Garry Walker and violinist Elena Urioste at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 2 December.
The concert opens with Britten’s Soirées Musicales – five short movements for orchestra that are fun, animated and contain lyrical melodies that result in a lush orchestral texture. Soloist Elena Urioste then performs in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 5. This fifth and final of Mozart’s violin concerti is infused with enchanting influences from Italian operas and encompasses Turkish music in the finale for a surprising twist. The concert closes with Symphony No 1 by Elgar, which achieved immediate phenomenal success after its premiere.
Elena Urioste first came across the violin aged two as she watched the children’s television show Sesame Street. Since then she has earned an international reputation as acclaimed violinist and was a BBC New Generation Artist 2012-2014.
Scottish conductor Garry Walker began studying the cello and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester. In 1999 aged just 25, he won the Leeds Conductors Competition, and has since gone on to conduct the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Orchestra of Opera North holds a unique place amongst British orchestras are the only ensemble in the country to have a year-round dual role in the opera house and concert hall.
